Neighbourhoods
The Houston Heights
When people speak of the Houston Heights community they usually mean more than just the Houston Heights Subdivision. The Heights is a unique and eclectic blend of neighbourhoods that extends generally from Nicholson on the west to I-45 on the East and from 22nd street south to I-10. Made up of the many subdivisions completed in the late 19th and early 20th century, architecture ranges from Grand Victorian mansions to Craftsman Bungalows to recent New Orleans Creole influenced construction.
The people are an eclectic blend as well. Older and younger, families and singles, longtime residents and newly moved in, all enjoy living side by side. The Heights boasts many churches, schools and businesses that bring together the community into a small town atmosphere. Strolling down 19th you are bound to meet someone you know. Dining out, the odds are great you will see your neighbor across the way making the Heights a Houston gem.
Garden Oaks
Garden Oaks has 2 sections. One lies just north of I-610 between Shepherd and Yale, while the other lies between Shepherd and Ella. Built just after World War II, most of the homes are cottage style sitting on very large lots. Over the last few years new larger homes have begun to find their place in the tree filled neighbourhood.
Recently Garden Oaks has seen a great increase in new owners moving into the area because of the large lots and close in location. Businesses, schools and churches are seeing growth as the area sees new people moving in and redoing the charming cottage they have fallen in love with or building their dream home in this idyllic setting.
Timbergrove
Timbergrove is the very definition of a mid-century ranch neighbourhood. Located just west of the Heights, this community shares much in common with the Heights when it comes to knowing your neighbors and enjoying in-town living. Many people choose Timbergrove because the homes are larger and on bigger lots than in many in-town neighbourhoods.
The area is lined with large trees and block after block of well maintained yards and homes that make you feel like you are home and your neighbors are awaiting you. While we know that “Leave it to Beaver” of TV land really did not exist, Timbergrove provides the tranquility that we all want.
East Norhill / North Norhill
East and North Norhill are a 1920’s and 1930’s neighbourhood that consists of various types of true cottages and bungalows on 5000 SF lots. Almost all of these classics still have their original architecture features as many have added to their homes but chosen to keep the original facades.
A mixture of people enjoy the curbed streets and well located and maintained parks as well as a true community atmosphere that leads to seeing people out and about in the neighbourhood with friends and pets along the way.
Shady Acres / Sunset Heights
Just north of the area that usually is referred to as the Heights are 2 neighbourhoods that have a diversity of architectural style. Sunset Heights is home to many 1920’s bungalows that are undergoing renovation along with newer construction of homes that are on smaller lots. Shady Acres to the east, is also seeing growth as new homes and town homes are taking their place in this growing neighbourhood as empty nesters, young professionals and those looking for more room seek a new home but yet still want to be in-town.
